Alchemy is the art of taking matter and forming it into something else. Brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric are naturals for this art. One of the principal concepts of Alchemy is the Law of Equivalent Exchange. This law simply states that in order to gain something, you have to give up something of equal value. But with this law come two taboos of alchemy: turning objects into gold, and human transmutation. Not even the Elric brothers and their great talents are immune to the consequences of breaking these rules. On one fateful night, Edward loses an arm and a leg, and Alphonse losing his entire body in an alchemy experiment gone awry. From this point, Edward's only concern is finding a way to return his brother to his body. He soon finds himself in the service of the government as a State Alchemist. State Alchemists perform alchemy at the government's bidding by using special devices that allow them to harness the power of alchemy, even if it means destroying lives, something Edward will avoid at all costs. But Edward Elric, the Fullmetal Alchemist, is able to perform the craft without the use of an array, something that makes him special. It is here the amazing story of the youngest State Alchemist in history begins.
