Armed with the first of the four tower guards, Dinah and Vincent set out to solve the rest of the Mausoleum's riddles, which prove more difficult as the journey progresses. The deceptive puzzles of Bizenghast's Graveyard lead the children into an underwater forest to stop a drowned girl's murderous rampage, through the early past of the town to rid the woods of a festering plague-carrier, and across the deck of a crowded sea vessel, headed straight for the heart of a typhoon. But a trial far more frightening than any vault is at hand for Dinah and Vincent, as they attempt to cheat the Mausoleum of its contract, only to discover that the one thing more keen for revenge than the Mausoleum's spirits, is the Mausoleum itself.
