Picking up from the first volume's cliffhanger ending, Sarai and Aulox's standoff is interrupted by a surprise attack of giant stone zombies. The zombies, called pegmatites, are mutated local villagers. Aulox is seeking Mother Wistable's help because he fears that, despite taking Barosso's life-prolonging medicine, he will turn into one of these hideous monsters. As fear of another pegmatite attack increases, Barosso increases his push to sell a pharmaceutical cure for mutation. After a grisly crime is committed and Sarai and Flicker are framed for it, it's up to a pair of local children to free them before the final showdown between the pegamatites and the still-human villagers.
