Saiyuki Reload Gunlock - New enemies or New allies??!!!! May 22, 2007
by Sarah
Although this instalment of the Saiyuki story doesn't quite follow the manga it is nonetheless a good dose of our favourite anti-heroes!! Sanzo is just as trigger-happy but with his gentler moments, Goku as hungry and energetic as ever, Gojyo lives up to his reputation as a womaniser and Hakkai... well Hakkai is just Hakkai!!
The appearance of a new character in the series leads to all kinds of moral/ethical questions not only in the Saiyuki boys' camp but the viewer may find themselves asking the same questions about certain issues (I'm being very careful about spoilers here folks!!)
The one thing I find very hard to come to terms with though is (even though I have sat through Reload) is the change of voice actors!! David Matranga in my opinion IS Sanzo and of course Greg, Illich and Braden are perfect for Goku, Gojyo and Hakkai - but if it really troubles you to hear someone else doing your favourite characters just do what I do when I rewatch the series and switch to Japanese!!!
Overall, the series is very good and there is some beautiful character development (although - and I won't ruin it for anyone - I have to say that the shocking, jaw-dropping final scene in the last episode on the 5th disc is quite different from a similar event that occurs in the Reload manga volume 7 and if I had to pick my preference of situations it would have to be the one in the manga!!)
Hope anyone reading this finds it useful and before I let out too many spoilers I'd better leave it at this or Sanzo will be after me with his harisen!!!
Sarah also recommended: Wolf's Rain, Orphen, Slayers, Witch Hunter Robin,
