While Zombie Fairy might not have the most expertly drawn artwork out there, the quality of it is quite high. The characters come off as very expressive, and the emotions they feel are well articulated by their faces.
On terms of story, it's not the most original manga on the market. However, the story is well-written, thought out, and very enjoyable. Like many manga, it alternates between dramatic and comedic, though it never feel forced or awkward and as such the story flow is uninterrupted. I had actually sat down meaning only to read the first stage, only to become so engrossed in it that I read the whole thing in one rather long sitting!
It was also quite interesting to see the author blend Chinese mythology into a relatively modern Japanese setting, and that really added to the enjoyability of this volume.
Unfortunately, it was intended to be a prologue to a series that apparently did not quite get off the ground, so the ending is rather open, though quite satisfying. Perhaps if it does well enough in volume print it might get another go.
In summary, if you're looking for a fun fantasy jaunt with serious tones, Zombie Fairy is a great one to pick up.
