The plot begins quickly and keeps a good pace considering that this is the first volume. There are moments regarding the characters’ back story, but the work never gets bogged down in it. The main male character, Shindo, is fun. He seems like a good detective, but has his flaws – such as being late. Shindo comes across very normal and is easy to connect to. He begins this work as a police officer just being promoted to detective and needless to say he has a very bad first day. You half pity him. The central female character in this work comes across like an emotionless Buffy the vampire slayer. Well, if Buffy ever got organized. She remains mysterious through out work. But it is fairly obvious that somehow she gets Shindo involved in the Tokko organization. After all, Shindo has been dreaming about her for quite some time now.

But those dreams involve . . . you guessed it blood and body parts!

The art is, as stated, gory and beautifully horrific. When the evil finally emerges in the work, it is so grotesque that you enjoy looking at it. Like one looks at a car accident.

Overall, Tokko is a great horror read with a good storyline and excellent horrific art.
