Not really what I was looking for. Jan 05, 2008

As a huge fan of FAKE, I was expecting great things from this manga. When I first picked it up, I thought I was in for a treat. But although the art is as outstanding as her more famous work, the story was a complete let-down. It reads like the opening chapter of a ten-volume series, not a completed one-shot manga. The story doesn't have time to pick up pace, let alone arrive at any sort of destination. The characters are bland, lacking the heart of FAKE. Fans of the author may also be looking for shounen-ai, and this is another area in which the author fails to utilise her considerable talents. It's an enjoyable enough read, and should be fairly pleasing to Sanami Matoh completeists, but like dry crackers it is deeply unsatisfying on its own. Trash could have been so much more if she'd revisited the idea and expanded upon her ideas, but as a single volume, it should probably be relegated to the trashcan.
