A piece of Asano Inio's Genius
Oct 25, 2008 reviewed by Crenshinibon
Solanin is the first licensed piece of the critically acclaimed Asano Inio's work, and to be honest it's probably not something an avid shoujo or shounen manga reader would enjoy. Asano prides himself on realism (or in some cases surrealism) in his drawings, and the entire work is a complex slice-of-life style view of the characters. The progression and pacing is excellent, and the relationships and character development all seems real, which is an important aspect of storytelling that seems lost in the majority of the material out there. Albeit short, I sincerely doubt Solanin is a piece that many readers will forget after reading.
I highly recommend Solanin to more mature readers who love other works in viz's signature line, but if you're looking for action, explosions, and fanservice, you would do well to turn elsewhere.
