If Samurai Deeper Kyo is an indication of Akimine Kamijyo's work, then he has an excellent command of mystery. He only reveals enough information at one time to further the reader's interest in the next volume.
Like most epic manga, SDK offers a plethora of quirky characters yet chooses only a handful to create it's rag-tag crew.
In many of his author's notes, Kamijyo cheekily refers to his work as practically historical fiction, due to his extensive inclusion of real-life characters from the post-Sengoku era. However, between obviously impossible attacks, mutants hungering for human flesh, and the very existence of the Mibu, this joke will always remain just that.
Whether you enjoy historical references in your entertainment, science-fiction, heavy fan service, obscure romance, or you just like to see severed body parts, this series is a must read.

More good samurai manga May 30, 2007

SDK was the first manga I ever bought. The action in it was the fully the reason I picked it up. I remeber opening to a page with the main character cutting a horde of bad guys into mince meat and that was the deciding factor for me. Unlike the anime which came later the manga has more depth to story. Cooler battles that do not end with an enemy transforming into a ridiculus monster (like the anime). It has many characters that go through interesting developments. If you like big sword action this is really the manga for you.
