Great! Jun 02, 2007 reviewed by Masaru
I found the story to be compelling and original and the world to be full of dynamic characters. It is a long series, but I find this to be one of its many strong points. The humor always seems right on cue and aids the story when things are getting tense. If you're looking for a great story with great characters, look no further.

A Long BUT great Series Jul 30, 2007 reviewed by The Furry Panda
It is true that one piece is a very long series, with over 300 Japanese language episodes already aired. But, unlike many other long anime's and manga One Piece stays interesting and even keeps the same principal through out the whole series. the creator of one piece said that he wrote the story that he would have wanted to read as a kid, and i believe that im lucky to be able to read it now. If you want to read a good story with good morals thats funny and intense than One Piece is for you.

One Piece Review Oct 11, 2008 reviewed by ChocoMilkTea
One Piece is by far the best shounen anime out there that I have watched. But not all share the same views as I do, lets remedy that, shall we?
A long time ago, there live a fearsome pirate king who goes by the name of Gold D. Roger. He was able to attain everything. But alas he was captured and sentenced to execution. In the brink of death, he proclaimed that he left the great treasure, One Piece, somewhere in the Grand Line and it is for anyone to claim. This event ignited the Great Pirate Age.
In the world of One Piece, there is such a thing as a Devil Fruit. A devil fruit is a fruit bearing some supernatural ability and whoever devours it will get a unique ability however its origins are unknown. There are three types of Devil Fruit, Paramecia, a fruit that can materialize your body into a property. Zoan, a fruit that gives humans the ability of a certain animal, but if its an animal, it gives the ability of humans. And the last but certainly not the least Logia, is a fruit that makes the consumer manifest a certain element. But of course nothing is perfect. If you eat any of the Devil Fruit, you will be rendered immobilize when submerge in the water.
And where is our protagonist? The anime revolves around our mentally impaired boy, Monkey D. Luffy or a.k.a The Straw Hat Pirate(title came from his worn-out straw hat that he always have on). When our boy here ate a devil fruit that turns the consumer's body into rubber, he sets off to find Shanks, his pirate idol to return his straw hat as promise and find One Piece to be able to earn the title of Pirate King. Along the way he gathers all kinds of oddballs for his crew, The Straw Hat Pirates.
Now how exactly is One Piece different from the hundreds of shounen out there. Well, it isnt. It is exactly what a shounen should be. It follows the lose-train-win formula. So how is it any better? Bingo. Because it incorporates the formula into something fresh and simple.
One Piece arcs can be surprisingly good. There were even times that I was shocked at some plot twists and revelations. It has a very interesting setting as well. And what might that be? The World. The whole world is One Piece's oyster. It varies from vast, scorching deserts to cold snowy mountains, the concept of adventure here is well defined, it really makes you feel that world isnt small after all. And that my friend, is what an adventure anime should really be.
One Piece knows how to pull it off, be it comedy or serious, and believe me, One Piece knows how to be serious when it needs to be. But it never forgets its roots at the same time, and that is the emphasis of friendship and the bond of Nakama/Friends that glues the whole crew together.
Most shounen anime's suffers immensely from originality. Because of this, it is hard to distinguish characters from each other, especially in my case as I have my fair share as an otaku. And most of the characters in em lack depth and substance, its hard to remember a character when you know very little about him. But One Piece is immune from this disease. Each character of One Piece is very... say....unique that you'll find it hard to forget about them. They all have their individual motives, strengths, weakness and even quirky traits. Plus, each individual of the Straw Hat Pirate Crew has an immersing past, that'll be hard for you not to get delve into. And they all have a certain role, not one character gets overshadowed by the other. They do meaningful interactions with each other. And regardless, that each member is vastly different from each other, they all formed a formidable bond. Even the by-passing characters are memorable.
In contrast to the majority, I find the animation to be creative. Just like how the characters are different and distinguishable. Unfortunately people see it as something of a turn off, and quickly judges One Piece as something infantile. I am not going to lie. One Piece will not go beyond the borders of a shounen. It is not mature. But thats not the point here. An anime doesnt need to be ripe to be good. It just needs to be entertaining. Although I do enjoy a deep, thought-provoking anime, an anime doesnt need to be complex to be satisfying. It can be anything, as long as it offers gratification. And One Piece does.
Another potential problem is its popularity. Most people consider mainstream anime's to be somewhat of a failure because of its targeted demographic, and that is everyone. If its able to attract toddlers, then it sucks that seems to be case for most people. Some people neglect any anime that is able to summon countless little children in its area, thus abruptly convicting it as over-rated. Heck, some people even constantly hunts threads, just to be able to crack Narutard jokes off some newcomer. Do not judge One Piece from its fans. Judge it for what it is.
Do not be mistaken, I am not saying One Piece is for everyone. In the end, its all about taste. But if your have any hint of love for shounen surging in your veins, there is no reason for you not to watch this, not one bit.
In short, the plot is very promising, the main cast is several but well flesh out, the battles are very diverse, and engaging and the comedy doesnt get old, even after 300 episodes. But One Piece is not a masterpiece. It does not break any ground whatsoever. No matter how you see it, its still your typical shounen.
Regardless of this, the level of enjoyment I receive from One Piece is insurmountable. And sometimes thats all you need. Scratch that. Most of the time that's all you need.

One of the Greatest Journey Ever Aug 17, 2010 reviewed by SimonL.
One of the longest series ever, it still manages to keep the story up and never gets boring. While some say it's too long and that it's a negative, I whole heartedly DISAGREE! It's long and that's one of the best points of this series, simply because it's just that awesome. A lot of people can't get enough and it would be a damn disappointment were it to abruptly end short from an epic fairytale. You can compare that it's long just like Harry Potters are huge books with a lot of text- does not mean it's bad- simply that it has a lot of imagination that wants to be shared with the world.
The world of One Piece is vast and Eiichiro Oda makes certain that each step of the journey is an adventure. Sure they are classified as fillers, but One Piece does it perfectly. It's not boring. In fact it's full of fun. And on some of the more serious fillers, it's part of character development. Nothing feels as if they're thrown in there just to take up time. Everything is in there because One Piece is a journey and an adventure story that does just exactly what its genre entails. A better analogy is that it would be like reading the diary/journal of a legendary adventurer, witnessing every moment of his adventurous life. So in the end, they aren't fillers at all. The plot is to search for the legendary treasure One Piece, and the main theme is the journey to get that treasure. Not at all fillers.
Characters! There are a ton of characters and each has an important presence. Not only that, but every character is unique and has a distinct individuality, so meeting new characters never gets boring. There are deep background stories to a lot of the characters with very little character development - though that is not a bad thing. The characters presence is so strong that they don't need much for you to grow attached, in fact, their background story is more then enough reason for you to cheer them on. Character relationship is also a big plus as it gives you that strong sense of bond.
Powers! What else can One Piece come up with?! More then half the things created I can never imagine how it could have been pulled off so creatively.
Story! Along with the characters, story is one of the most important thing One Piece offers. While also full of fun and comedy scenes, One Piece also has a lot of emotional scenes that gives a strong sense of loyalty and friendship. In fact, a lot of the fillers grabs the heart of the readers, each with its own mission and diverse story behind it. In fact, One Piece had made me wept out of my eyeballs more then a couple of times. It also in-fueled anger. This series is great at bringing in the right emotions at the right time. While the main plot is simple: get legendary treasure One Piece, there are a ton of plots and hidden plots in the journey.
The anime version is just as awesome as its manga version.
One Piece is what is is: an adventure, a journey. This is not for those who are out on a whim and just reads to get it over with before moving to the next. This is for those who has a strong sense of loyalty and bondess. It is for those hearts that treasures friendship and loves the thrill of a long adventure with their friends. This isn't a cheap thrill, but a hardworked journey.

This is one of the best mangas EVER! Aug 28, 2007 reviewed by Ricardo Peña
The story is simply amazing, every character has his/her own personality and own goals.
Also the humor on this series is very good, it turns simple conversations into something you will find very enjoyable to read, even when fighting, the jokes are pretty good, but this title also has his touching moments, in fact I can say One Piece is one of the most touching mangas in some moments.
The wacky character designs that Oda makes could make you turn off to reading One Piece, but DO NOT do that, this is a manga that should be readed by every shonen manga fan, the story is great and it just keeps going better at each arc, if you don´t like the first arcs, go read Arlong Arc to know what Oda-Sensei is capable of doing.
A great manga for shonen lovers.

Hilarious High Seas Adventure Aug 17, 2010 reviewed by Redharlow
I recently got into manga myself and I told myself that I was going to give One Piece a shot just because of what I had heard from other people. Eida has a masterpiece in his hands. The characters, story, and artwork are fantastic. I didn't realise piracy would translate so well into any kind of comic form let alone manga. Absolutely highly recommended for anyone looking for something silly and lighthearted.

I'm glad to see that the current English language adapter for One Piece is wise enough to make good decisions regarding the seriousness of the dialog in the Alabasta arc. I've watched the subtitled anime for a while now, and I can say that the writer knows how to convey the emotion of One Piece with accuracy.
