That's all I can say.

King of the Lamp is written by the creator of Tenshi Ja Nai!, which was an excellent series. Seeing the name again made me interested in the work. Sadly, this is where the interest begins to fade. The premise of the series is that a king, the genie, who once forced 1,000 girls to be in his harem now must grant the wishes of 1,000 girls in order to gain his freedom. All in all, an interesting premise with promise.

However, the author unfortunately chose to write the episodic chapters by focusing on the different girls in question. By the first chapter, the formula for the next chapters are firmly set and amazingly bland. Then after a series a near-misses caused by wishing the new relationship is confirmed through sex. (Which isn't pornographic. The scenes last all of two pages - max - and are complete fluff. The worst thing you see is a breast in one scene. Still, it feels slapped in for no point other than to draw a fluffly sex scene.)

I really, and I do mean really, hate the brief sex scenes. There is no passion or heart pounding moments to justify it. It feels as if there is the story, its moving along, its reaching the conclusion and BAM! sex! Totally pointless. Plus, who has sex just to prove that you love the other person? Realistically, a kissing scene would play out far better. Only in the very first chapter was the sex scene justified or even remotely related to the story.

That said, the author would have done better to focus on the genie. Yes, he is horny and he does make each girl pay in order to have a wish completed. But he is actually funny. And wasn't he supposed to be the title character? By the end of the story/stories the reader doesn't know if he even gets freed. In the end, what I thought was the main character ended up becoming a supporting character. And the supporting characters became the main characters - making each story introduce and remove a new main character to the reader.

Lastly, the bonus story is good. It is self-contained and does have some plot holes, but manages to tell a decent story. This story hings on two male supernatural creatures who continue to live by feeding off females. Therefore the bishies never age. They take in a little girl who grows up to be a big girl and naturally falls for one of them. P.S. she doesn't know about them because any normal girl wouldn't wonder why her adoptive brothers have never aged after x amount of years. (Yeah, this is one of the plot holes.) As stated it is cute, but nothing fantastic. And yes, there is a sex scene in this one too.

All in all, the theme of this one-shot collection of works is SEX. The work is not well written or exciting to read. About halfway through, I got bored but forged ahead hoping for something to suprise me. I suppose the bonus manga was a nice surprise, but it still felt like the work of a fan fic writer. The art is beautiful however.
