Futuristic fantasy Aug 21, 2008

Kieli is set in a time period far from now and even on a different planet. However, despite this fact, there is little sci-fi about the work.
The story begins in a what appears to be a Midwestern town chapel. From there, the backgrounds change but look very common place. Kieli is a normal girl who happens to be able to communicate with the dead and locate the dead. But she doesn’t use this power for anything remarkable. She eventually picks up Harvey, an undying, as a sidekick (and his friend Corporeal who is a spirit in a radio). This is as about sci-if as this work gets. The undying are manufactured people who – cannot die. They already have. Spirits also abound in this work making somewhat supernatural.
Overall, the story reads more like a slice-of-life work. Kieli goes on her adventures and the reader tags along. This is not to say that the stories are entertaining and sweet, but they fail to do little else. The work is easily forgotten and shelved.
While I always consider first vols a trial work, Kieli left me wondering where is this going? There aren’t any goals to reach or anything to be obtained. In fact, in the last chapter of the work it seems that Harvey would be a more interesting person to follow rather than Kieli.
All in all, Kieli is a fun work, but easily forgotten. Cute, but unremarkable.

Kieli, an intriguing story of an outcast girl traveling with a dead man. Jun 26, 2008

Kieli volume one: An interesting beginning to a story that I believe will turn out to be an interesting web of interconnecting memories and feelings. This manga gives the reader a cute but sad (and sometime horrific) tale of each ghost that the duo Kieli and Harvey run into on their journey. Allowing the reader to begin to understand this complex world within the manga, and start understanding the mind sets and emotional standpoints of the two main characters. Put simply, I've enjoyed reading this manga and hope to see future installments in the near future. I like how this manga intertwines a cute story with creepy undertones about a girl trying to find her place in this world, while having such a power as hers, with a little bit of horror and blood thrown in to keep the reader spooked and on edge, wondering exactly what (or who) these two might come across next.
