Very Educational, But Still a Shojo Manga! Sep 18, 2008
reviewed by Rissa
I love this series! I originally picked this off the shelf because of the cover and recommendations on-line that it was the flip-side of the manga, Rurouni Kenshin. So, I wanted to read it, just to hear about the Shensengumi-the opposing side of the Rurouni Kenshin plot.
It's very educational, and I've read so much historical facts about Japanese history in this shojo manga, than I've ever read in a non-fiction book. I'm still very impressed with it. And it's not overly factual, it balances nicely with historical accuracy and the occasional shojo manga drama! :sighs: (Okita Sensei)
I think that people who love shojo manga and would like to learn history from a different type of book, will find this to their liking. Me, being an American, I haven't really been taught much background into the histories of other countries...so I find Kaze Hikaru by Taeko Watanabe extremely fascinating...and slightly addictive.
I hope everyone who reads these books can learn from them, and still enjoy the shojo drama that is one makes this book amazing! I hope this helped for some people!

An amazingly good manga Mar 17, 2008

I know that Watanabe-sensei probably didn't intend for her manga to become a huge series with a historical bent but it's now on Vol. 23 in Japan and shows no signs of slowing. This is an excellent series that fuses humour with slice of life and a hard dose of reality in many cases to create a wonderful tale. I'm reading this series in Japanese as well as English so I can tell you that you will not want to put it down once you get started. You'll begin to feel like the Shinsengumi are your closest friends, wild unpredictable brothers and can understand why the heroine, Kamiya Sei, has a hard time parting from them.

Fun Read Jun 20, 2007

Even though you know what will eventually happen to the Shinsengumi you want them to succeed. The characters are charming and fun. There are some pretty funny gender bending moments, especially when it comes to love triangles. This series can be serious sometimes but that's balanced well with the romantic and comic misunderstandings. Very enjoyable read. It's even a little educational.
