Realistic May 13, 2008

After living a life of sports, Haruna decides its time for something she has always ignored: love. Now in high school, she is determined to get a boyfriend. But being fashionably challenged due to misleading magazines, no one will give her the time of day. That's when she meets Yoh, a popular 2nd year who has a knack for what's in. After a lot of persuading, Haruna is able to get Yoh to become her love coach. When I first read the description, I was turned off cause it sounded pretty shallow. But after reading it, I have fallen in love with this series. Haruna is a great heroine. She is considerate, determined, and pretty happy. She doesn't regret her tom boyish past, but just wants to experience new things. In turn, she learns a lot about life and love. Yoh is a great hero too. He isn't all sugary romantic; but actually quite harsh and sometimes brutally honest. Lets face it: he is extremely hot. The other characters are all realistic, each one having their good and bad sides.
The story is very sweet. The things Haruna experiences are things that we can relate to. Things like different crushes, disappointment, awkward dates, and misunderstandings. The pacing is slow, building up the storie's romantic tension. It is also very innocent, where just a smile can make your heart race. Who can deny that these little things are a big part of what makes love so exciting.
The art is very good. Every character has a distinct look (it's definitely not the kind of series where the characters have different hair styles to tell them apart). I must applaud Kazune for her design of Yoh. He actually looks japanese! (don't lie, you know how most heroes look more caucasian than asian...)
If you're looking for a cute, realistic series, I definitely recommend High School Debut.

I really enjoyed this story and am eagerly waiting for the next installments to be released. I love the way Haruna tries so hard and doesnt let her feelings get hurt so easily. She is one of those charchters that may not catch peoples eye when they first meet but soon wins them over with her over the top personality. Yoh and his friends are great as well, each have their own charms. I like the art in this series and the charcter interactions are great.
