Entertaining Fluff? Jul 14, 2008
reviewed by loraxalia
When I started reading, I felt like the concept behind Guru Guru Pon-Chan was great, that is was an original concept that added a lovely touch to the story. Being able to transform into a dog or human at will would be a great ability, and exploring the complications of doing so would be an interesting read. However, that's just it - Pon-chan is and interesting read, it's not gripping or mind engaging. Whilst it's good to have Shojo manga that is occasionally just full of fluff to give your mind a break from action, Pon-chan needs some extra oomph.
I felt the action of the series could have been compressed into four volumes: nine is ridiculous. In places, details that were crucial to the plot where left hanging and you moved on to the next day in the life of Ponta - sometimes dubiously so, as would there even be a next day for Ponta? Apparently there was. This, to say the least is frustrating.
This manga is good on the surface, and I admit some parts where very enjoyable, but when you delve deeper the action is repetitive and shallow and not very full with entertaining fluff or storyline.
If that's what you're after however, sitting down with Pon-chan (one volume at a time, mind) with a cup of tea after a stressful day at work can be quite rewarding.

Lovely story Apr 01, 2008
reviewed by Ambsu
Guru Guru Pon Chan is a sweet story that features a not so human heroine. It's packed with tons of cute humor. Some aspects of the plot are far from realistic (ie. the heroine is a dog that turns into a human by kissing a bone), but that type of realism is something all magical girl storys have in a common; so all you need is a little imagination! It's an overall fun book that animal lovers can get a kick out of. The story also has a nice level of intensity, which keeps drama seekers turning the page.
This series definately is in the shoujo catagory, it's a very lovely book practically every girl would like.

As if girls weren't complicated enough. Jul 30, 2007

This series is definately different from anyhting I've ever read. The main character Ponta is very bouncy and lively because she's a dog that can change into a human by kissing a bone. The plot blooms from a relationship between ponta and a human. Although it is sometimes completely ditzy, it can also be a very touching read.
