GodChild Review Jul 05, 2007 reviewed by Spirit Archer
GodChild is a wonderful story that was beautifully laid out by Kaori Yuki, the creator of Angel Sanctuary. Although I've never picked up her previous manga, this was a wonderful introduction to me on what she can do.
The story is laid out first in 'The Cain Saga' which tells a few stories like how Cain and Mary Weather met, Cains relationship with his father, Alexis, as well as how Doctor Jizabel, Cain's half brother first meets him. Although the art is older, it does answer some questions as those.
Anyway, Godchild revolves around a few Mother Goose rhymes, such as The Crooked Man, Solomon Grundy, Black Sheep, ect. The rhymes make for a beautiful beautiful story, which usually comes out with someone dying or a tragic ending for Cain.
There is also the involvement with the Tarot cards in the Delilah group. Each has their own special and unique ability and sometimes show aggression towards the other member. Besides the rhymes and Tarot cards, there is also evidence of Biblical terms within the plot, such as Cain. He was the world's first murderer and thus makes him a hated target amongst the members of Delilah (mostly because the Card Master commands them to kill him).
Aside from the horror, blood shed and constant struggle in Cains life, there is also moments where it's just funny. Oscar, a character seen in the beginning, is usually seen around Mary Weather, as he has taken a fancy to her and wants to wed her, though, she always rejects, and Cain throws him out of the room. Cain also has his funny moments, even without Oscar around.
This IS a shojo manga, even though it's also under the category of horror. Cain can sometimes flirt with women when he needs or even wants to. He is seen a few times doing it, and always drives the women crazy. If you're a fan of shonen-ai, you could put Cain and Riff's relationship as that, but I wouldn't, and just say that it's very deep. Not all male relationships are about love, but about trust.
Beyond the plot, the art helps draw you in if you're into Kaori Yuki's work. It's beautifully detailed and has a dark touch to it. She also draws her characters during the time of old London, and in Gothic Lolita wear. She does a beautiful job on creating the right mood for the right scene. Even the death scenes are a bit gruesome if you aren't very careful.
In all, if you love the horror along with the timeline of old London (such as Jack the Ripper?) or even Kaori Yuki's previous works, I suggest you pick this up. Even if it is a dark manga, it gives you horror in grace, elegance, and rhymes. I do suggest an age of 13 and above though. It'd be a bit odd if a nine year old was reading this and their mother popped in during the scene where a woman's head was being cut off.

Another masterpiece. Apr 15, 2008 reviewed by Saere
The mangaka of this series (Kaori Yuki) possesses the rare ability to create hit after hit. A genius display of art, Godchild is both easy on the eyes and intellectual.

Certainly Different. Feb 18, 2008 reviewed by poteto (Godchild Vol. 01)
Yes it is! But I enjoyed it, I've yet to proceed from this vol into the series, but I've liked it so far. It is my first time experiencing a work of Kaori Yuki, but I've grown on it.. maybe its just because I'm into the whole aristocratic thing and bishounens ? well, all I know is I like it. The story so far, seems to just be different every other chapter? Oh well, variety is good as well. If you like bishounens half naked most of the time or dressed up in a topcoat and what not, i recommend it.

A Little Different From Most Girl's Manga Oct 18, 2007 reviewed by Rata (Godchild Vol. 01)
Hearing about Angel Sanctuary I was a bit worried when I started reading this manga. Tales of siblings getting it on are not my thing at all. While there is mention of incest it doesn't seem to play a major role in the story, at least not in the first volume. Since I prefer shounen manga it was my first time seeing fan service for girls. The main character is naked a lot, some serious near miss full frontal shots, and is put out there as the oh so sexy protagonist, but most of the characters are beautifully drawn along with the background/scenery art, very detailed. The most interesting thing I noticed about this title is that for a shoujou manga it has a lot death and a degree of gore. If someone says heads will fly in this title they more than likely mean it literally. As for story and character development Godchild seems to be a pretty basic detective story with some pretty melodramatic characters. Interesting manga, but it fails to really get me involved. A good buy if you prefer quality art over story.

YAY FOR GODCHILD! Jun 19, 2008 reviewed by amusmental (Julie)
The followup series to Cain Saga, this was just as good as the first half of the story! The charismatic characters, amazing artwork, gothic setting, and exciting storylines made this hard to put down! The ending made me sad, but I still think it was well worth it. Please give it a try; I don't think you'll be sorry!

Beautiful Godchild Oct 16, 2007 reviewed by Star_Angel_Genesis
This series is by far one of my favs. Not only is the art beautiful, it's got the storyline to match. I found the first book a little hard to get into, but as I read on I found myself totally tranced. The self sacrifice, friendships, loyalties, and twisted plot leaves me itching for number 7 every time I go back! Let alone 8! One of the things I love about this series the most is that theres other smaller classic plot lines weaved in that everyone grows up knowing. It kinda brings the darker side of butterflies, lovers, and even family.
This series is simply a must read for any anime freak.
