Good stuff... uh-huh. Sep 25, 2007 reviewed by Stah-witch-knee
Gin Tama is funny. I honestly don't understand why its not in the comedy section on this site. I discovered this manga in a Shonen Jump I bought one drunken evening after the bar... someone told me I shop lifted it, but I don't believe 'em... I wasn't that drunk.
Anyways, I read pretty much everything in that issue (even the Yi-Gi-Oh... holee, was that crap! I don't want to read a manga about people playing a card game... and whats with Hikaru No Go? Isn't manga suppose to entertain? Awful), except Gin Tama.
To tell the truth, I hated the art. It just seemed so plain, and my luck with purshasing crappy manga before reading it, then regretting the purchase afterward is legendary... so I didn't give Gin Tama the time of day. Then I was bored one day and had nothing new to read, so I finally broke down and read it... and I loved it. I bought it the next day.
The concept is so ridiculous, and the way Hideaki Sorachi handled it was awesome. Its a pure comedy piece. Usually I hate the main character and collect manga for its supporting cast (like Father Anderson from Hellsing), but Gintoki Sakata is a really good character... shades of Mifune from Yojimbo. Even the short Sorachi put in there (Dandelion) was really well written... kinda choked me up a bit. I hope this manga lasts a long time. Very good toilet reading.

Gin Tama Aug 31, 2007 reviewed by S
The first several episodes ran in Shonen Jump, which really piqued my interest, so I picked up the volume. It was worth it! The story has much more of a sci-fi than historical tone, for those who care, and has a great sense of humor. The volume also contains a short story by the same author, which was a good read in and of itself.

I'm don't have the heart to give it one star Aug 17, 2010 reviewed by Josh W.
I'm done after 4 volumes. The plot doesn't exist in this comedy manga, which isn't always a bad thing, but in this case it is. It is episodic with reoccurring characters. Yet, it tries to make a plot out of the stupidest things. And the comedy really isn't funny. The interaction between characters doesn't exist, at all. I honestly couldn't get to know any of the characters, and did not care about them either. Including the main character Gin.
A mediocre comedy manga trying to seem like it has a plot.

Amazing Manga Covers Jan 24, 2009 reviewed by Miranda
The only reason I wanted to read Gin Tama when I was younger was because of its very cool and illustrated manga covers for the series. I was truthfully attracted to the series just because of that, and once I finally bought the first issue, I wished I looked at it before perchase. After all, I was young, so I really just got manga to collect, but now I have a bigger passion for the stories more then for collection. Anyhow, I disliked the illustrations and decided not to read it. My money went to a waiste until I had gotten more mature with having a manga passion and decided to read it, after all, I can't judge a manga by its illustrations. As I read the first volume I instantly regreted not looking at it before! I have to say, its a very funny manga and I enjoyed it alot. ^-^
