An Otaku's Manga Jul 05, 2007 reviewed by Fanboy
Genshiken is a great manga that follows a group of young college students as their friendships grow through their shared love of all things Otaku. The strongpoint of the series is it's realism as it documents the humour and tribulations of the day to day lives of the characters, many who may be familiar to you as caricatures of your own friends. It will appeal to most as it touches on all areas of otaku culture e.g. manga, anime, videogames, cosplay, doujinshi, hentai, yaoi etc and even deals with a lot of social commentary and coming of age issues. I recommend this for the fanboy (or girl) in all of us.

The Truth Sep 25, 2007 reviewed by TheRoyalFamily
Sometimes it hurts. And sometimes, it's hilarious.
Genshiken is the latter. Sure, it's pretty much the embodiment of all the lame stuff otaku do - and as we read it, we see how lame it really is. But at the same time, we see how ridiculous it all is, and this makes us not despair for ourselves, but take heart. For we see the success that these characters have in what they do - the joy they have - and as this series is pretty realistic, we can identify with them, to an amazing degree. We can feel what they feel - all the good times that are had. We can see how lame we are (as one character points out repeatedly), but we don't care - there's nothing really wrong with it, is there?
As said before, this series is quite funny. Even though there is nothing really out-of-the-ordinary, and all the characters are realistic (FAT people in manga, as normal characters even?!), there is still great humor to be had. There's even a bit of romance, if that's your thing (and it's still funny, while being completely relatable).

Otaple Jan 05, 2008 reviewed by Uzume
Genshiken a really fun watch. Comifest, dojinshi, anime, video games model building, cosplay, manga all of the deliciousness of geekdom and how it interplays in a small group of individuals. The protagonist ( Saki ) is vehemently NOT otaku, but head over heels for one. I love watching her work through the idea of changing him to non otaku status.
There are a ton of inside jokes and references, and I'm sure I missed a ton of them. Which means repeated viewing is just that much better !
