Bloodly Romance Nov 14, 2008
reviewed by Kristi
First I’d like to caution the faint of heart. This is the goriest romance I have ever read. If that’s not your thing I would strongly advise against picking up The Demon Ororon because once you pick it up you won’t be able to put it down. Frequently the blood, guts, and bones made my brain squirm (it’s not my thing either) but I suffered through books 1-4 with perverse pleasure.
Story: In this tragic romance Chiaki the half-angel orphan meets, falls in love with and in many ways saves Ororon the demon (king as it turns out)— and all hell breaks loose. Literally.
This premise is what drew me but it turned out unlike the cliché cutesy demon-angel romance I was expecting. In this world the angels are every bit as cruel as the demons and the demons are very cruel indeed. It’s a wonder really that Chiaki and Ororon, who it seems are on the hit lists of everyone above and below, manage to find the time to fall in love in between all the attempts on their lives. But they do and its sweet if evanescent.
What I liked: The characters. Everyone had charisma and was easy to love and care about right off the bat.
What I didn’t like: Death count— one million and rising. I’m exaggerating (slightly) but there’s a lot of killing and maiming going on.
Art: Since the art is always a huge deciding factor on whether I like a manga I’ll touch on the fact that Mizuki Hakase’s art is.. different. It took me a few pages to get used to but once I did I liked it, it fits the mood of the story. It’s very stylized and consistent.
Kristi also recommended: Angel Sanctuary, Aquarian Age: Juvenile Orion,

This is a pretty good manga. The plot is decent and the whole demon-angel idea is good considering demons don't side with angels.
stoned-to-hell also recommended: InuYasha, Mirage of Blaze,
