Death Note Rocks!!! ^_^ Dec 26, 2008 reviewed by Eddierodmem666@aol.com
Death Note is easily one of the greatest mangas you will ever come across. It is enriched with a brilliant plot that draws you in. Light Yagami is a talented and bright student who comes across on a notebook that gives him the power to kill. He plans to use this power to better humanity by eliminating criminals. However, an American dectective who goes by the name of L vows to put a stop to Lights plan. The great thing about this cat and mouse game is that neither can easily capture each other. The story does tend to fall flat after volume 7 but you still keep intrest in finding the end. Death Note makes you debate on what evil really is and contains well rounded chracters which makes this manga unique from all the others. Over all a great manga/anime that you will enjoy if you love thriller/mystery and cool hair!

The New-Age Cat and Mouse Game Jun 19, 2007 reviewed by Shin
Death Note, Easily the best thing in the Mystery/Thriller Genre in many years. Instead of most Thrillers/Mystery's were they string you along by giving a bit of info as you go. How the mystery is solving the crime and catching the unknown person. This takes a different spin. Its more like a Cat and Mouse game were the two are constantly trying to out do the other to catch the other. Super Detective And Super Cute L is trying to prove Light is Kira...While Light is trying to find L's real name. It is an extremely new fresh take on a dated genre. A good example recently was like the Movie, The Presitgue. Where you have two Magicians trying to outdue each other. This series is alot like that. So they focus more on the characters, how they respond and what not. The entire series is just awesome

We quickly learn how powerful the deathnote is, in both the manga and dvd we learn of our head characters Ryuk, a shinigami who is obsessed with apples and entertainment, and Light Yagami, a A++ student who wants to live in a better world but feels powerless to help... that is until he finds a notepad with strange writing on it and a translated portion reading DEATHNOTE and explains various rules on its usage.Light decides to test it... but what happens when you use a power you dont understand, when that power takes control, when you think yourself....a god?

Death Note flounders without its previously strong cast Jun 04, 2007 reviewed by hdefined (Death Note Vol. 10)
I’m just not grooving on Death Note anymore after the turn of events in volume seven. The dynamics are all wrong.
First of all, Light doesn’t get much opportunity to be as ruthless and cunning as usual. He’s hindered by suspicion left and right and only gets a few precious moments of freedom toward the end of the volume. Misa and Ryuk are all but invisible, and the rest of the task force are all dupes – but not Light’s dupes anymore. Near has everyone wrapped around his finger as he makes enormous leaps in logic that suspend my disbelief a little too far. The logic of Death Note always had its share of negligible holes, but ever since volume seven, the holes have really widened.
Since Near can’t stop Light yet and Light can’t stop Mellow and Mellow can’t get the upper hand on anyone (talk about useless), the cast gets two additions, one old and one new. The new face is the aforementioned Kira follower who has no prior significance to the events of the series and as such has an entire chapter devoted to his backstory – a radical shift from the forward momentum of the narrative and a subtle cue that perhaps the writer’s scrambling to maintain the story’s cohesion. The returning character is one readers probably won’t remember well, and their reintroduction is wholly contrived, but they do in fact make for a welcome inclusion.
The mood and narrative voice is still strong, as is the striking art, but the plot of Death Note has worn out its welcome. The intensity of the first seven volumes has all but evaporated with the removal of several key cast members. This era of Death Note would serve better as a Foot Note.

Death Note - A Masterpiece of its Time. Jun 26, 2007 reviewed by Kowa
Death Note is probably one of or perhaps the best manga I have ever read. Its not like anything else out there. It doesn't have your classic hero's and villains. It's not about drawn out battles of power and strength. It's about mind games, a chase of cat and mouse. Two opposing characters who cannot be simply defined as good and evil. Genuises battling it out in ways that blow you away. Plot twists that will have your mind on edge to figure out. The intensity and emotion in this series is amazing. The depth of the characters cannot be explained so easily. I think this is a great take on how we human's feel about how law enforcement and capital punishment are dealt with. This is something that could definitely be possible by how we think. It's great how it touches up on things that are not so hard to be brought about in this world. With the exception of the actual Death Note itself.
Death Note does have a lot of text in order for it work. I hope that this does not discourage you because it is the conversations and internal monologues that make this what it is.
I will admit that after Volume 7 that Death Note does begin to go down hill. It deosn't excite you as much. It's still worth buying to read I will assure you, but the very essence of Death Note that kept me on the edge of my seat slowly disappeared. Its probably due to the absense of characters that made this series what it is. Some might disagree and others will agree. The only way to find out is to read this yourself. This is a series that you will not be able to put down or ever forget.

Enjoyable--Though a Brain Teaser May 29, 2007 reviewed by Sam. B
I LOVE Death Note, though I will admit, many people don't--and usually for the reasons that I love it so much. The plot is incredibly complicated (and because of this, sometimes hard to follow, I'll admit)--but this makes it all the more interesting! Plot twists and turns are everywhere, and often, as soon as you figure one piece out, another twist comes around! Though, complex plot is what you should expect when you have geniuses battling each other to expose a killer. If you can't stand mysteries, I wouldn't neccessarily reccomend Death Note--but if you're up for it? Read it, read it!

In my opinion Death Note is a facinating look into how the mind of a criminal might work. For some this manga might seem a little lenghthy talk wise. Honesty it has more deapth than alot of manga I've read! It has intellect, humor, and a touch of horror and fantasy. It's definately worth a read I think anyone who likes a little bulk in their reading diet once in awhile would appriciate this manga ^___^

This is probably great for collectors...but I kinda thought it would be a cool, fun, but /functional/ lighter that I could use every once in a while. I honestly could not make it light, after about ten uses, and then couldn't find a way to get more fluid into this. And then in the process of trying to find it, the whole thing kinda broke. Only upside, for me, is that I got it as a free gift. But That's just a warning to those who are planning to pay for this item

Well... Nov 07, 2008 reviewed by Madison
This series was FREAKING PERFECT-Until I read the last couple mangas.
I'd bought the entire series at the same time, trying to see what the whole hype was about. I read the first book. That was interesting. The second book was amazing. And this continued on into about the tenth book. Then the plot seemed dragged out, and weighed down. It was simply a mindless battle between Near and Light. It kept going, and going... and going... and going. There was too much text to read on the pages and it felt like I'd heard it all before so I'd catch myself skipping quite a few pages. There were a few interesting parts though- don't get me wrong. When kira's apprentice was chosen, it made things a little more interesting, but the whole Near and Light battle **after about fifty dozen times of it being the main focus on quite a few of the mangas* got quite boring.
Overall, it was a good series. I mean, I've re-read it. Just up until volume six. Or five.
The animes the same thing too. Expect not only do we have an want to rip out ear-drums voiceovers, but we have not one- but TWO mindless battles which seem to go on forever. If it wasn't for the drawings I don't think I would have kept on reading.
So, point is here folks, its better to buy one or two mangas, and see how you like it. Unless you don't mind horrible voice-overs. Or you don't mind mindless battles the drag on forever. Or if your a die hard Death Note fan.

OH MY SHINIGAMI! Oct 30, 2007 reviewed by machina
I originally picked up this title due to it being a new release and stopped at the first volume; because I tend to only read shoujo manga. But as the series picked up in the media and I found more and more photos of whom I believe to be the amazing L I couldn't help but look into it more. And I became hooked.
This series is amazing, just how the personalities flow and how Light can change so much with or without the note, it's quite shocking. Sometimes he appears to be a hero, at others a complete evil; which during a specific part in the series I found him to be completely despicable. The way the characters blend and think on the same level and the personal battles of wit and intellect make it captivating for those of you who like a good read; whereas the thrusting of air head Amane Misa into the story is great for comic relief.
The art is simply fantastic and the detail that goes into the Shinigami is fantastic. Not one looks like another, they all have their own unique features, and personalities. It's definitely worth the buy, having much more content than most other mangas I have come across. Where most have several images and minimal dialouge, Death Note has plenty of both; and captures your interest from the start.

If it is possible to have a manga that keeps you on the edge of your seat this is one of them. The story starts out a little slow, but picks up VERY fast. There is a lot of reading with this one, but it is all very cunning and well written.
There are twists and unexpected events everywhere in this manga. While reading it there won't be a dull moment. [unless a lot of reading gets to you]

Death Note is a Masterpiece! Jun 09, 2007 reviewed by Escahime
Death Note is one of those stories that drags you in from the first page and never lets go! First of all, the art is stunning. The use of light and shadow and perspective really gives you the feeling of suspense and being in the characters heads. Next, the plot’s twists and turns will test even the best minds in trying to keep track of the logic and rules of the notebook.
Light is a criminal but he’s doing it to create a better world (You just can’t hate him for it) and he is right even if his methods are wrong. L is the reclusive genius detective who is constantly pushing to make Light reveal himself as Kira. With nonstop suspense, I just couldn’t put it down. Every action has a reaction and it is exciting to discover how Light will escape every trap L creates for him. This is a series you shouldn’t miss!

Worth the Price? Jan 24, 2009 reviewed by Miranda (Death Note: L Nendoroid PVC Figure)
I would pay up to 10 dollars for this cute figure of L in such an awsome chibi form, but the fact that its so much money for a tiny figure is fairly bothersome. I'm sure its resonable to make it that much money probably because of the quality of the item or the factory that made it, but I'm still not buying. I want this figurine so badly though! But I guess regular figures (non-PVC figures) will have to make up for it.

Death Note Apr 15, 2008 reviewed by SEDavio
Death Note: Yagami Light finds himself a notebook, dropped by a Shinigami: the Death Note. If you write down the name of a person in this Death Note, he’ll die, no matter what. With this new Death Note, Light begins to create a perfect world, killing off all criminals. Then, a detective who goes by the name of “L” gets assigned to catch him.
Let me first state that Death Note is unique amongst anime. There are nearly no fights, and nearly the entire anime consists out of people planning and plotting to outsmart each other. Through the course of the anime, Light makes optimal use of the Death Note, and he comes up with a number of really smart and careful plans.
Because of this, the main good points of Death Note, especially in the beginning, are its surprises. Some plot twists are ingeniously incorporated in the storyline, and they make sure for maximum shock-value. This makes sure for a number of really intense chapters, even with the lack of fighting or other forms of physical action... Its a Must Read!!!!!!

An item for endless fun... and collectible, too! Sep 04, 2007 reviewed by Itachi (Death Note: Light Yagami (Kira) Nendoroid PVC Figure)
GREAT item for any Death Note fan! This figure series is called 'Nendoroids' and they will be released for Death Note as a 4-figure set (Light, Ryuk, L, and Misa). They have semi-interchangable parts and limited posability. Light comes with 4 faces (on the box it's marked rather humorously as 'smiley', 'serious/diligent', 'evil grin.' He comes with a Death Note as well, handcuffs, and 2 pens (in case you lose one, how wonderful!). He stands about 5 tall, with his head taking up most of the room! Collectively, my friends and I have 3 of these figures, and one of them stands fine without the stand, one has trouble even with the stand, and the last stands fine with the stand. Don't expect him to stand on his own without some in-package help. I believe this figure has a rather limited pressing, and will become very collectible. It's a real riot changing around his face, and his cuteness will win you over for sure!

Death Note, Aug 28, 2007 reviewed by Ricardo Peña
This is one of the best mangas ever made, if you like mistery and you are smart you will be able to comprehend the imact this manga has.
Its not just a complex manga, the main characters are so intelligent that they second guess, third guess and even fourth guess what could be hidden in a simple phrase, even a simple word, how was it said, who said it.
Also this manga has something that is not seen so often, the main character might be considered evil or good, is just how you see it that will make it be God or Devil.
This is definetly a LOVE IT or HATE IT manga, since its so different to the average manga on the Shonen Jump Line, you should read a preview first and then make a choice, but I think any one that likes mistery and an overall good story will love Death Note.

Death Note Jul 30, 2007 reviewed by Desiree
I have been very impressed with this series. Tsugumi Ohba has done an absolutely fantastic job of developing the plot, the characters, and especially in showcasing the devolution of Light Yagami as an ace student and nice, if a little jaded, high school student. The segue into the evolution of Light Yagami into Kira is equally spectacular, the degeneration and reformation of his psyche wonderfully displayed. Takeshi Obata's clean illustrations complement the series perfectly, and are always a visual pleasure, with his attention to detail and penchant for fashion. Each character is well developed and has qualities that we all either abhor, or can sympathize with. Tsugumi Ohba has also kept the plot well-spiced with twists and turns, and even some of what I personally like to call whiplash effects--things you'd never see coming. All in all, the Death Note series is fantastic, and one that won't be collecting dust on bookshelves--you'll have to read it over and over!

Death Note Review Oct 10, 2008 reviewed by ChocoMilkTea
This is a unique show that brings a new meaning to the concept of “Death Gods”. Death Note would have to be the finest written non-action, non-romance anime/manga of our time, with a story that can easily get you hooked. ^_^
This is the setting of this incredibly unique show. From the summary it may not seem like something worth watching but the first two episodes are capable of getting almost any anime fan hooked, to this thought-provoking show. Underneath all the death and normal day-to-day occurrences is a battle of wits, where you have two geniuses Light and L, constantly trying to outsmart each other. During these mental clashes it is easy to change the side you support, as both characters are so alike but with different ideals.
The animation quality of this show can only be described as “perfect”. The character designs are highly detailed and strangely enough, even a lot of detail is put into something as simple as writing that it can make anything seem so dramatic. There’s really nothing negative that can be said about the animation because no corners were cut in the production process.
The music helps add to the spectacular viewing experience, with the addicting opening and ending themes and a superb orchestra score to back it up. The only bad thing is the deafening 2nd opening theme, which you’ll either love or hate.
Overall this anime is a masterpiece able to turn a simple plot of a notebook giving the user the power of death, into something so thought-provoking and intricately written that you’ll be glued to every word that’s said. The only bad points are that there’s some unneeded comedy and a phase when the show went downhill a little but this short period didn’t last long. Although some of it changed from the original manga storyline, it managed to end disturbingly well, wrapping up everything with no lose ends. So I recommend Death Note to any shounen anime fan, who wants to try something a little different. ^_^

I was a bit on edge about this series at first. I had heard very little about it and wasn't sure if i wanted to read it. I decided to read it, only after my friend bugged me for a month straight about it. I requested the first 2 volumes from the library. I was amazed how quickly i was hooked on it. I went back the next day and grabbed every volume that the library had, which was up to vol 11. I was a bit stand offish at the end of 11. I didn't want to read 12. I didn't want to let the story end there, but i went to the bookstore and picked up 12 and read it there. now I'm on the 2nd time through of the series. I can't say anything bad about it. :)

Death Note 13: How to read is A official rap-up of the 12 voulume Death Note Series. while not a addition to the story line, It is a treat any savvy D.N fan would enjoy.
The first treat that awaits you upon cracking the book, is a Playing-card size Painting of Major character L, Which release his long awaited Surname. The first Bulk Of the encyclopedia Is a nice and well organized Pile Of almost any information You could Desire. Much of which are nice Insights into The characters Lives. each biography (over 20 in-all) is packed with Info That Was cut from the main series for whatever reason. The Birthdays, deathdays,Likes and dislikes, etc Of Most Of the Major characters are released. Each characters Before and during Story History is Logged with motivations, Quotes, and Artist comments about their role in the series.
The Next section Is List after list of events log and information. list of L's snacks, Nears Toystore List, a full database of tricks and Stunts pulled During the Kira case. I wont spoil every List and database, But i say with confidence that you wont be disapointed with the sheer mass of info that awaits The Hungry fans.
after The tsunami of facts and statistic, Your treated to Bonus comic, creator comments and interviews, (which provides Great Insight into the Creative Process behind D.N.) Including a full list Of the meaning behind The titles of all 108 tanobakin Chapters.
The Interview Between The two authors, tsugumi Ohba and takeshi Obata, was enjoyable and Insightful, Giving Much detail about the pairs Intention behind the series.
Last. But Most defiantly not least, is the One-shot Pilot for death note, which greatly differs from The finished piece. The Pilot reads like a pop-horror Novel. Less serious and more mystical, evidenced the death eraser, A plot device for Bringing characters back to life (cut from the Series For Making death Less of a threat as stated by Ohba)all in all, The Pilot presents a more hopeful, Bright world, In contrast to the darker, less Hopeful world of The finale d.n.series.
All In all, This Is simply a collection and recap of death note. There is much to be enjoyed here, The Only true flaws is alot of Reprinted art and No New Story line. But these are rather minor and shouldn't lessen your enjoyment.
Highly reccomened for Info Hungry Fans, and anyone who wants to cap off their collection.

Death Note Apr 04, 2008 reviewed by Guyra
Death Note is a series about a boy called Yagami Light, who finds a notebook that fell down from the world of the Death Gods/Reapers - the notebook has the power to kill anyone whose name is written in it, as long as the writer writes the real name of the person, and has that persons face in his head. Yagami Light, the son of the head of the chief of police, ranks #1 on Japanese national tests, and has a strong sense of justice.
By means of the notebook, he wishes to make the world a utopia for all the good and lawful people in the world, but can killing criminals really be considered justice? The mysterious detective known only as L takes the case when international police finds themselves meeting the wall in their investigation. L is known for having solved a number of strange cases where the police have gotten nowhere. He is also known for being quite secretive about his identity, and being the smartest detective in the world.
This series, which spans over a total of twelve volumes, contains an intricate, mysterious, and fast paced story. One of the most interesting things about the story is the blurred line between good and evil. You have two kinds of justice facing each other in a battle of wits, and wther any of them is truly justice is hard to say - this story explores the shades of gray between good and evil, and this is also one of the main themes in the series.
The characters are also diverse and interesting. The main character, Yagami Light, is considered a genius - he ranks #1 on the Japanese national tests, and has also helped out the police on several hard to solve cases, due to the fact that his father is the chief of police. He has a great sense of justice, a smart mind, and generally no problem keeping his cool in most situations. He thinks things through very thoroughly to find the best plans, and despite being such a studious guy, he's also generally popular.
The second main character, L, is an enigma. Considered a genius detective, this guy knows how to think outside the box, find the best plans, and has a rather weird personality. When Yagami Light and L goes head to head with each other, it is really hard to see who will win - they might be poles apart, but still they are also quite alike.
Aside from these two characters, you also have Ryuk, a Death God who owns the Death Note Yagami Light uses, MisaMisa, a teenage idol, Demegawa, a greedy TV director, and many more, all with deep and interesting character personalities for the reader to explore and enjoy.
The art is also one of the series many good sides - not only is it really well drawn, but the style is rather interesting, fits perfectly for the series, is generally gorgeous to look at, and with details a plenty.
If you're looking for a good story, and especially if you enjoy mystery and crime stories, perhaps even a bit of dark fantasy, then this is definetly for you - though one can enjoy it without being specially interested in these genres too.
If you're looking for some light reading, however, this is not a series for you. This series has an intricate story with loads of smart plotting and thinking, and it will work your brain some.
I still suggests that everyone at least tries reading this series, as it is not only a very good and somewhat unique series, but also highly likable in general.

Death Note really out of this world! Fantastic story!! Oct 25, 2007 reviewed by Manga Reader
I got the first volume and didn't think it was going to be anything good because of the sketchy art on the cover.
I was HOOKED on the first volume!!! Not to spoil anything, it's about a boy who discovers a notebook and finds out what it can do. It's an unique story that I've never read anywhere else. Also the artwork is excellent to look at too.
At the same time, it is a very complicated story. As you go on into further volumes, the story gets more interesting. I'm thinking, wow, this author is really brilliant in creating this storyline!! There are unexpected twists and turns which I love. Nothing predictable.
The climax at the end was fantastic! The ending is very powerful that left me thinking about it for a day or two afterwards.
Now, I usually don't re-read mangas once I'm done with it unless it's VERY good that I can pass it on to my boys when they get old enough to read it. This series, Death Note, is a keeper for me! It's that good.
If you have read Akira or Please Save My Earth, you will like this.

Great item for any fan! Sep 04, 2007 reviewed by Itachi (Death Note: Ryuk Shinigami Nendoroid PVC Figure)
I was very excited when I found out there were going to be Nendoroids of Death Note characters. Very well made, with interchangable-type parts and some posability, these figures are great (though Ryuk missed out on the hair changability)! You will never see Ryuk cuter than this! For fantastic fun, you can open and close this mouth, make him stand on his own, or hover above Light's shoulder (if you decide to purchase him as well). Ryuk comes with an apple, and apple core, detachable wings (that move), a dual-type stand, and the Death Note. Great figure, and I bet you it will be collectible. Out of print in Japan already, I believe! Get him while you can!

Death Note Aug 05, 2007 reviewed by Audria
Death Note...I'm not sure who's the good guy and who's the bad guy in the story at all, it's a bit confusing, but keeps you on your toes! Every time the main characters say they have a plan, it leaves you in suspense, one of the best manga series there is.
It's a perfect blend of supernatural, modern society, and detective work, definite 5 star ^.^

Amazing Aug 17, 2010 reviewed by Manga Addict
Death Note is a must read manga, with a marvelous plot partnered with amazing artwork, it is a series you don't want to miss. Death Note is a unique murder mystery that makes the killer the main character. You, the reader already know who the killer is, and you follow the killer throughout his daily life with the death note. Most of the series is from the killers perspective and it is a very effective and unique way to tell the story of death note. There are many great characters that are developed throughout the series. This is my favorite manga, it is shorter than most with only twelve volumes. This makes it easy to own the complete series. I own all twelve books and I read them over time and time again because they are so great. I give Death Note my highest recommendations.
Manga Addict also recommended: I would recommenced Ral Grad because it has the same illustrator as Death Note and it also has a great plot.,
