I am usually dissapointed with american manga but I love DMD! It's so cleverly done, the puns and jokes are fun and entertaining, and the art is so creative! I would recommend this for readers new to manga AND old!

An OEL that doesn't suck Apr 22, 2008

I always say to be wary when you pick up an OEL. One of two things can happen. One, it's ripped off dribble that couldn't entertain a monkey. Two, it is actually interesting and well done.
Dark Moon falls into catagory two. The premise seems like ripped off dribble, but it is exceuted in an amazing fashion. Yes, there are vampires, witches, and all other forms of spooky classics. Yes, we get the standard premise of new girl in town adjusting. However, the writing is funny, the art is nice (styled in current manga fashion), and the side characters save the work from medicority.
The first chapter moves a bit too quickkly, but considering that the work only goes for 3 vols I can understand why it is skipped. The main characters adjustment is downright hilarious. It really helps if you have every gone to a foreign country (or State) only to stare in awe at the local cuisine. (Then pray for a packet of twinkies) The friends strike me as interesting especially since the author didn't choose the classic the first boy who is nice to her she falls in love with formula. (Although Buffy fans might find the witch in love with a werewolf a bit of an eyeroll. Then again the human in love with a vampire might do the same thing. Luckily there is no Angel so far.) The main character is sharp, funny, and actually has a backbone.
All in all, it is a good OEl that sets out to be a fun high school romance/comedy. Don't set expectations high, but do expect a few fun moments. Buffy/Angel fans may have to take this lightly - I did.
