D. Grayman Aug 05, 2007 reviewed by Audria
D Grayman is one of the only mangas that I've ever seen that has a mix of technology, (or what LOOKS like technology) and supernatural. The suspense is great, but most of the adventures don't really lead much anywhere, that's probably the only flaw >.> Anyway, it's a great series that I recommend ^o^

D. Gray-Man Review Oct 11, 2008 reviewed by ChocoMilkTea
On the surface, D. Gray-Man sounds like just another shonen anime with an organization of good guys with special weapons fighting evil monsters. Yeah, that's the base of it, but DGM turns into something more, something deeper than many other shonen anime series. In fact, I feel that it sneaks around seinen territory.
While the setting is standard shonen all the way, you'll find yourself surprised when watching this show. It starts off a bit slow, with many fights, small arcs (~1-4 episodes) and nothing special to it. However, it quickly picks up, and some way into season 2 or 3, DGM starts to show its qualities. The story soon blends in action, emotions and last but not least, realistic power-ups. The story is overall more deep and serious than most shonen anime. Where I am now - almost at episode 100 -, the show has just gotten better and better, and I definitely hope that it will continue doing so - or at least stay very good and not decrease in quality.
The characters are without a doubt the strongest point of DGM. I mentioned earlier that DGM is sneaking about in seinen territory, and the reason for this is the characters. They don't think You bastard! I need to suddenly get stronger so I can defeat you and get stronger and defeat the bad guys. The characters here aren't all about brawling against the evil guys. They have emotions. Emotions which they have to face. And that's what makes it into a semi-seinen series; it's a bit more character-driven and not so much plot-driven.
The animation quality of DGM is also astounding. There's a lot of detail put into the environments, and character designs are great too. Special effects are really great, and the same can be said about lighting effects. When you consider that DGM is a bit dark and serious, the coloring is really great too; it's just as dark as it needs to be to fit in with the series.
The soundtrack is definitely the weakest point of DGM. The background music isn't especially memorable, and not really great. I hope they decide to get a new soundtrack soon so I can get something better. Also, using the same stuff for 100 episodes is a lot. OP and ED themes are okay though, and I like the more heavy style of the OP themes - it fits with the tone of the show. Voice acting and sound effects are great though.
Final thing which I should mention is that the fillers in DGM are actually good. What fillers? you may ask if you've watched the show. To be honest, I asked the same question when I first heard that there was a lot of filler in the show. The thought never even came close to my mind. So that's a plus.
All in all, I feel that DGM mixes shonen and seinen into something special and unique. It may not appeal to all shonen fans, but those of you who like more serious action anime will enjoy DGM even more.

Stop me if you heard this one before... Oct 16, 2007 reviewed by Stah-witch-knee
This sounds mighty familiar, does it not? Teenage boy (isn't it always?)... cursed somehow, but its a very advantageous one that endows the protagonist with amazing power (how is it a curse when you have an arm that turns into a demon busting weapon... oh, I get it, he can't hold hands with girls because its gross... insert fart noise)... because of said curse, he's set upon an amazing destiny which will find him saving the world somehow... a secret society enlists his help... demons are involved as well... blah blah blah, bling bling bling.
D. Gray-man is one big, lazy cliche. I haven't been reading manga for too long, but even I groaned after reading chapter one of this laziness. I've played alot of Japanese RPG's in the past before boredom hit and they all pretty much follow that formula, except location which seemed unispired as well (alternate historical England? Why not the Yukon in the 50's... now thats different!). This manga is so unispired it hurts. I was hoping the guy on the front cover standing next to whats-his-name-main-guy was an interesting supporting character, but it turns out he's the main villain... what a let down. I bought this when I was first starting to read manga. After that, I now research before buying... thank god for this site. I gave D. Gray-man away to this girl I know who reads Dungeons and Dragons novels... I knew if she liked this mess, that I was right for hating it... she loved it. I wouldn't read this on the toilet, but I would use it for other uses in that room... use your imagination as to how.

A great manga. It's got it's own style of horror that I can not find very often. It also has wonderful art, similar to that of Death Notes.

D Gray Man Apr 18, 2008 reviewed by Chibi-Ryoko
A little confusing at first, but newbies(like myself) soon get into the story and understand the manga. It folllows the Anime well, as I am watching the anime and reading the manga at the same time and I find it easy to read to the same place as I am watching or vice versa.
A very good read, and like all good stories I wish it was longer.

D.Gray-man Volume 1 Nov 24, 2007 reviewed by Crenshinibon (D. Gray-man Vol. 01)
I must make this clear- I have never been a huge fan of the shounen-action genre. The cliches typically have a tendency to become completely overwhelming, and the characters often seem to be very one-dimensional. However, D.Gray-man elicits a very different reaction from me, even from the first volume. The beginning is very well done, and the characters already have strong personalities. Allen especially makes for an interesting hero, despite a somewhat typical main hero past. Additionally, the main villain, who doesn't particularly look or feel like a villain at first, actually steps forward into the role quite easily. The series is at a solid starting point, and can only get better from here.

my first D. Gray-Man review Jun 02, 2007 reviewed by Shiezka
this is my first review, so it may not be the best.
D.Gray-Man is set in the 19 century. It's about a 15-year old boy named Allen Walker; whose deformed, red, left hand is an anti-akuma weapon containing Innocence. Innocence, also known as the crystal of the god, is a material used to fight Akuma. Once Innocence has been converted into a weapon, it is called an anti-akuma weapon. Akuma are created of dark matter, the opposite of Innocence. They are the Millennium Earl's army against god. Allen's mentor, General Cross, sends Allen off to The Black Order. Allen and his new friends from the Black Order are ready and waiting in the fight against the Millennium Earl and his army of Akuma. It's another epic battle between good and evil!
