After reading Gorgeous Carat, I really wanted to explore what else You Higuri had written. Thus, I stumbled apon Cantarella. This series was almost instantly addictive. It is, essentially a historical fiction, put into manga form. The interplay between characters is very complex, and interesting to follow. There's plenty to love in this series! There's political strife, family tension, love, murder, mystery--all the pieces of a good plot. If you enjoy history mixed with mystery and a splash of fantasy, You're sure to love Cantarella.

Loosely based on the true story of Cesare Borgia, the manga of Cantarella sheds some light on what may have happened in the life and time of the real Borgia family. Though, one would hardly call this a non-fiction title. Cardinal Rodrigo de Lanzol y Borja longed to become pope, so much that he was willing to give up the soul of his bastard borne son to gain such a title.
Plagued by the demons which now own his soul, Cesare has little control over his power. As his body begins to transform, so does his heart; and the slaughter begins as the tragic tale of love and hatred unfolds.

With You Higuri's unique style the story of Cantarella continues. While the demons within Cesare gain ground and grow stronger, Chiaro is faced with the though choice of either choosing his love or his beloved friend. With Cesare rushing the matter of Lucrezia being married. What will Chiaro do?
