Osamu Tezuka, 'the god of manga' in his native Japan, is fondly remembered for cute creations like Astro Boy, Kimba the white lion, Princess Sapphire/Prince Knight, and Unico. But before he became a professional manga-ka, he was formally trained as a surgeon, and in Black Jack, widely regarded as his darkest work, he has created a fascinatingly ambiguous world of disease and pain, love and hope. The unlicensed surgeon known to the world as 'Dr. Black Jack' is outwardly callous and cold-hearted, but this troubled man is also capable of doing great good. The deeper one delves into the world of Black Jack, the more interesting his multi-faceted nature becomes. There's always something new to learn about human nature when you delve into Tezuka's manga, and Black Jack is no exception. Overcome your shock, dear manga fans, at his old-fashioned and clunky character designs, for without Tezuka manga would not exist in its current form. As soon as your eyes adjust, you will discover that there is nothing wrong with this manga, sadly discontinued though this edition seems to be, and so, so much that is right.
