If your looking for the best of all Action Manga. You found it. A series which is not afraid to get and dirty with Violence, Vulgar, And Sex. This is not for Children at all. Gatts is known ad the Blackswordsman. The man who wields the legendary sword Dragon. Which is past 7feet long and extremely thick. With this...He fights against the Demons, The God Handm, And Against Fate. The story is an incridibly dark medevil one which gets dark. But if you can bare the tone of the story. Your looking at probably one of the most fleshed out stories in the history of manga. The detail in the art, The characters, The action, The plot. Its all there and 100% grade A material.

The only question is...Why are you not reading it now?

THIS SERIES IS MATURE (NC-17). Do you want pimp battles, blood, sex, death, gore, and demons, but still want a good story and memorable characters? Look no further, this is the best of the best. The main character, Guts, wields a giant sword that would put Cloud Strife to shame! If you've seen the anime, then you haven't seen nothing yet. The manga is 100 times better. The anime takes place during volumes 9 thru 12 (approximately) of the manga. During these volumes, there is a flashback of Guts past. The reason the anime is based off this flashback is because it was tame compared to the rest of the series. Guts is a cursed man. He lives his life to get revenge for his fallen comrades against the traitor who put him through HELL. Guts is such a bad ass that he can slice horse rider AND HORSE in half with one swing from his sword. He can kill hundreds of demons by himself. When he breaks both his arms, he wields his sword WITH HIS TEETH. This man is hard core! He makes Kratos (God of War video game) look like a pansy! There's not much else I can say without straight up spoiling the story, so I'll just say if you like hardcore action and enjoy saying DAMN! every time you read a volume because Guts is the most bad ass character you have ever seen, then yes, READ THIS.

There's probably only one reason you shouldn't read the entire manga and watch the anime, and then ultimately spend the rest of your life in quiet contemplation on just how exactly awesome it all is. And that would be that you haven't hit puberty.

It's simply the best. Amazing artwork, awesome characters, a plot and world of an Epic nature (many series try to get that Epic feel, but Berserk practically defines it), and more giant-sword action than I could appreciate in one read.

I've read the volumes I have time and time again, and I can really understand why its popularity in Japan is on the level of Star Wars in America. If you like light-hearted series, than perhaps this will be the perfect step into the world of intense action and deep story that only series like Berserk can offer. And if you like series with a little darkness, you will love Berserk almost to the point in which you will consider naming your children after characters from it.

The series starts off slow but picks up. Has amazing still pictures, and the anime itself captures your interest. Unfortunatly it only has 26 episodes but the manga has 30 books and is still going. The art of berserk isnt that great in the first few books but as the series progresses the art work changes and looks amazing! The story itself is unique, and there isn't one like it.

This is where it all begins. I could say, O and what a beginning it is but the truth is you may not even like the first volume that much. And the simple reason is because Miura is a god and starts us off in the middle of the epic, revenge filled quest. We as readers are just not intelligent enough (especially me who quit the series for a while because I didn't care for the beginning) to understand what he was doing. He created so many question and they weren't answered right away; which readers usually can not stand. But once you read through the series and come back to it you say' WHAT THE FUCK THIS IS THE BEST FIRST VOLUME EVER!!!!!! And its true it really is something that must be read more than once to understand what Miura was doing, and appreceate it for the great first volume it really is.

I gave it 5 stars based not on my first reading which would have been much lower but of how great it is once truly understood.

The art is not at its peak here either. Though it isn't bad I actually like it quite a bit it's just different. It gets way better though to the point of, Wow can a human draw this well.

So sit back and read through Berserk and then come back to volume 1 and read through it again and try to prove me wrong. I BETCHA YOU CAN'T!!!!!

Yes, I said it the greatest story ever told. It has everything you can ever want and probably stuff you didn't. The story of course revolves around Guts' the Black Swordsman and what a mian character he is. I even believe he maybe the number 1 on the greatest characters ever created list. His tale of revenge is, though now seen as usual in plots, done perfectly and with more emotion than you probably have ever seen before. He and the entire characters around him, all great though a couple can be annoying at times, make up some of the most complex, true to life characters ever created. They are as close to real humans that you may find in a manga or comic period. Miura's ability to create such great characters is truly a gift from the gods.

Berserk is probably in top 10 of best drawn mangas around. Though to many it starts off somewhat simple it evolves quickly actually into looking incredible. The use of shadows and motion are unparalled to many mangas. It is truly art in motion, and you won't be able to look away.

Other than the story the fighting is what makes Berserk so great. Guts is the MOST BADASS CHARACTER EVER CREATED. He can kill anything and everything and not in the way were its, oooooo come on lose for once damn it but more like KILL ALL THOSE BASTARDS. LEAVE NO ONE ALIVE.

WRNING: This story is SUPER GRAPHIC. It has Murder (male, female, and children), Rape, Nudity, etc. in it and is NOT for the EASILY SQEEMISH. Be ready to see horrible horrible things but be ready to lover seeing them as well.

SO go enjoy the greatest piece of fiction ever put on paper and never look back for Berserk asks for no puty and shows none.

i first heard about berserk from a naruto fanfiction crossover, and i new that i had to find this manga/anime so i managed to aquire the anime and to be honest i was disapointed apart from the first episode the rest were just a realy long flashback, and for a while i gave up on berserk until i went round a friends house and he had all the currently translated english berserk manga so i decided what the hell, i gave berserk another shot and this time i wasnt disapointed, the manga is so in depth, i even enjoyed the annoying pukk, i'll finish on one thing gutts is the man!.

As the other reviwers say this is one of the best action series ever written. It has all the good stuff: blood, guts, sex, swords, giant creatures, demented twists and everything else except rock and roll(well maybe in the anime). If you collect manga, then you cannot call yourself a true collector until you have this series on your shelf!
