Meh... Jun 16, 2008 reviewed by amusmental (Julie)
I LOVE romance manga. Adore it. I have nine bookcases full of manga and probably 85% of it is romance. This story bored the heck out of me most of the time. The story is about Aoi and Kaoru. Aoi is a rich girl who is in love with Kaoru, a boy who left his similarly wealthy family for personal freedom several years back, also leaving behind his engagement to Aoi. Aoi's dream is still to marry Kaoru, and when she tracks him down to his apartment where he stays while taking college courses, he is surprised, but not displeased to see her. They immediately fall in love all over again, and work hard to stay together until they can be married, with occasional interference from the families. Aoi insists on living there with him, and when the family can't budge her they buy the couple a big house and send Aoi's instructor/caretaker to be the live-in chaperone. They pose as a landlady and boarder and end up with a group of other female boarders who -surprise!- all like Kaoru, too. Cute premise, fine. Great artwork. Aoi's adorable and all. But there's next to NO plot, or it's the same plot over and over and over again. What was it, 17 volumes or something? I only own it all because I kept hearing it was good from male friends and once I start collecting a series I hate to stop. Basically every chapter was Oh, I love him/her, but maybe they're sick of me. Oh wait, they're not! YAY! Kiss! The end. EVERY. FREAKING. CHAPTER. This was at least interspersed with a random one of the other girls thinking about how much they love and want Kaoru for their own reasons, and making ridiculous plays for him, much to Aoi's discomfort, but that got old and repetitive pretty fast, too. The series was really just written more for the purpose of fanservice than for anything else as far as I can tell. Some of the characters are cute or quirky (rich and spoiled Mayu, breast-obsessed crazy American Tina, big-boobed and clumsy Taeko, her little cousin Chika, the cute ferret mascot, and Miyabe the strict caretaker. But it's not really enough to hold your attention unless your intent is just to drool over the random fanservice shots, of which there are plenty. Bottom line, sure it's worth a read once, either because it's really sweet or because you want fanservice, but I don't think it's worth owning if you don't already have it.
