Ugh May 30, 2007 reviewed by Tuttle
Seriously not this mangaka's best work. The main character is so wishy washy... Night is just odd. The best character is Gaku Namikiri in my opinion. There are better series' by Watase out there.
Tuttle also recommended: Fushigi Yugi, Imadoki, Alice 19th, Ceres, Angel Sanctuary,

Absolutely Amazing! Jun 04, 2007 reviewed by Deejay_Beta
This is one of my favorite new (to the us) manga series! I don't like to write spoilers, but what I will say is if you like romantic comedy this is an awesome series! I didn't expect the hilarity along with all the romanticism and it all works very well together thanks to Yuu Watase's great story telling. I haven't been this addicted to a series since Chobits. I have read all the current issues (Vol 1-3) and all in one sitting (it's that good!) I can't believe I have to wait until August for the next volume. Oh well. It will be worth it! Do I recommend this series? ABSOLUTELY! P.S. I have loaned AB to several of my male shonen loving friends and they have all went out and bought copies of AB for themselves, so boys don't overlook it just because it is a shojo.

Absolute boyfriend Jan 05, 2008 reviewed by Marie_Hearts_&_Dreams
I personally liked this manga by watase. but i agree its not one of her best but still entertaining. night is weird but hey hes a robot i don't think robots are supposed to be normal. Gaku is odd in his own ways and the heroine of this story keeps getting pressured by school the company and her best friend next door id be a little freaked out to if i was her.But if you are looking for a comical romance with just a hint of nuttiness then this manga is right for you.

Absolute Boyfriend Jun 11, 2007 reviewed by machina
Shy Riiko has had a rough time with boys; and not to mention, she's a klutz! When she overhears her latest crush dissing her behind her back, that's it for Riiko.
She takes her frustration out by accepting a disc from a strange salesman and purchasing one of their new 'Nightly Lovers Series' love dolls. As it turns out, he's a rather pricey toy; and a sex toy at that!
Riiko agrees to settle her debt by teaching Night everything she knows about females, but what she doesn't know is the key to keeping him by her side for always. And when she finds out; she's not too keen on the idea.
The only complaints I have about this series is the fact that there are only 3 volumes released... HURRY UP WITH MOOOORE! Wahhh. Oh, and it's very Chobits/Kurimi-esque with the whole automated doll that you have to activate and they think of you as their master.

If you love Shojo! Sep 25, 2007 reviewed by Brittany Moo
If you've read books by htis author before and you enjoyed the 'character plot' more than the fantasy (Ceres, Alice 19th etc) then I definitley recommend this book! It's got the good! A quirky heroine, attractive male co-stars and social-stemmed drama! Though you never really know where the story is going, the story isn't complex. A light-hearted romance...

I love this manga because it is a real deviation from the standard high school romance. It's wacky and fun, never too serious and easy to follow. Really worth it.

AUGH! Jun 16, 2008 reviewed by amusmental (Julie)
As much as it hurts to not give Yuu Watase (one of my favorite authors) more stars, I don't think I can go over 3 this time... Watase's work is amazing. Great artwork, fun characters, amazing storylines... This started out awesome as usual; I was rushing to get the next volume each time it came out...but I was bawling by the end. (Don't worry, I won't explain why; you can find out yourself if you read it) >.< And that's just my first complaint. Absolute Boyfriend is a story about a mail-order obsessed girl who can't seem to get a boyfriend to save her life; she's always turned down (you find out this was due to outside interference later) and after finding someone's cell phone, is offered repayment by getting a discount for a new online store. Not intending to buy anything, but unable to resist the selling point, the girl takes up the offer of a free trial for a mail-order boyfriend, adding lots of personality options. When the robot, which looks and feels ridiculously real arrives, she likes him, and accidentally miscalculates the trial time, only to be informed she owes 1 million dollars. She has to look for ways to keep Night as she dubbed her new boyfriend. She makes a deal to keep Night and pay whatever she can get and let him collect information on women for the betterment of the site's products. Other characters include her 'friend' Mika and the boy next door who ends up being Night's rival in love. Sounds great starting off, right? I thought so too. I loved it until the end, and then got kind of depressed/annoyed at the ending an a few things that never got proper closure. She didn't tie off certain things. Ex: The main character runs into an issue with a backstabbing friend and says something to the effect of goodbye and thanks to the friend. They never talk again after that. Wait, what happened to closure?! Or the friend having a revelation and coming back to her? SOMETHING, at least!!! O.o The main character is kind of wishy-washy right until the end. I mean, pick a guy and say you like him, don't keep flip-flopping and making both guys uncomfortable! Even if you think you 'like' both of them, pick one! >.< And as I said earlier, the ending was a tear-jerker. And it's a bum deal for both her and the other person, kind of. I mean, they end it all Oh, this was a good experience I'll never forget but NO. Just...no. I want a happy, everything-works-out-for-everyone (at least mostly) ending. Not...this. >.< Sorry if this seems like a rant, but I was really caught off guard with how it ended up. On the plus side, the art and outfits are up to her usual amazing work, and it had it's normal funny moments. The guy who sells her Night is fairly entertaining and charismatic; I liked him. I guess it's still worth reading just to get more of Yuu Watase, but I was still seriuosly disappointed by this as her latest work. I know she has a tendency to incororate sad moments into a lot of her work, but it's the first one I've read with a sad ending...Urrrgh.

Not too bad Jan 12, 2008 reviewed by Manga_Fanatic
This was the second series I've read by Yuu Watase. I am enjoying it. The book's universe is very easy to settle into. The main characters -- Riko, Night and Soshi-- and some situations they get into are pretty believeable. However, I must admit, I thought Riko was a little dense to begin with and it took some time for her to grow on me. Soshi seems to be the most grounded of the three. And Night, well, he's special in his own delightfully upbeat kind of way. All in all, the series is worth checking out if your looking for a momentary escape from the everyday.

Bitter~Sweet Ending Jun 20, 2007 reviewed by ekitty13
A manga with a bitter sweet ending and very touching and romantic. something a girl who likes romantic novels would like to read... but you guys can also read it too LOL XD anyways this is a very sweet story and cute, but not something that you would want t read if you're looking for a good laugh. It's also kinda like a male version of Video Girl Ai. This isn't a long manga, so i recommend that if you started reading it, that you finish it. ^_^

Awsomely Cute Jun 04, 2007 reviewed by Pink Cherry (Absolute Boyfriend Vol. 01)
This is seriously a good one. Why? It's hilarious. Okay, this girl wants a boyfriend but every time she likes a guy they turn her down. Awwwwww. But when she finds a cellphone the owner offers her anything. So she told him she wanted a boyfriend. He gives her this disk to his companies website and theres a free 3day trial for a Nightly Lovers Figure. When is comes that is when the fun really begins! I have never seen anything rip their clothes off so fast at the mention of a bed. Anyways she does begin to have feelings for him, but the free trial is up and she has to pay a million dollars. Opps!

loving it May 29, 2007 reviewed by Koneko
I like this series and can't wait for more of it. Yuu Watase sure does love love triangles and trying to figure out what and who loves who and how much is fun. Though the situations don't seem plausible, everything happens in such a way that it makes sense...a weird kinda sense ^^. I'd recommend this manga to all who love complex and difficult situations with hard problems that are not easy to solve.

Very Well Done Sep 25, 2008 reviewed by Scorpian
I'll be blunt: the whole deep love story thing is not my type at all. However, this is more like a romantic comedy, and a good one at that. I freakin' loved this series! I broke out laughing several times. This mangaka somehow managed to take a genre that's not well liked and make it appeal to everybody. It is just simply very well done.

Another Great by Yuu Watase-sensei Jul 28, 2008 reviewed by Aniras The Dark
Being a collector and huge Yuu Watase fan that I am, this was a series I had to pick up.
Absolute Boyfriend is about a young girl who always seems to get dumped by the guys she likes. She ends up helping a guy named Gaku, who tells her to pick something from his company's website as payment for her help. She inadvertently picks a Night Figure, an android who's purpose is to be a lover to it's owner. Being a normal girl, she loads her figure with everything a girl could want in a guy: charming, protective, caring, etc. Low and behold her shock when he's delivered and she has to give him a kiss to awaken him. There's not only that, in order to fully make him her boyfriend, she needs to sleep with him!
And so is the drama of teenagers! It starts off fast, introducing the main characters and the idea of what might happen. It progresses steadily, introducing new characters that become obstacles in her and Night's path to being happy. I would say that this is another great story by Watase-sensei, if only a bit short.
Unfortunately, when Watase-sensei's stories aren't too big of a hit, she is pressured to wrap it up and take her story from beginning to end as she tries to tie up all the loose ends of the tapestry of her story. It doesn't mean that the series is bad just a little rushed towards the end with action happening quickly when it was at a steady pace only moments before. As great of a series as it is, it has turned into another Alice 19th, short, satisfying, and rushed.
All in all this series is funny, romantic, and will keep you interested till the end, even if it is rushed. My friends and I would all recommend this series and all of her other ones too.

Wow. May 19, 2008 reviewed by kodi-chan
I applaud Watase-sensei yet again. She's outdone herself! A story with love, suspense, and overall strangeness, Absolute Boyfriend is a great manga for shoujo fans looking for a little comfort reading. The art style is easy to understand, but detailed in a realistic way, and the characters are so lovable you just want to squeeeeze them until they pop. ^-^ Throughout the series, I was talking to the characters, saying oh come ON, and noooooooo DON'T FIGHT!! It was entertaining. BUY THIS MANGA!!

Order Your Own Boyfriend Online! Mar 20, 2008 reviewed by Spirit Archer
Being a fan of Yuu Watase and having just completed Alice 19th, I instantly picked up Absolute Boyfriend because one, the title 'Absolute Boyfriend' drew me in and two, there was a half naked man on the cover! Expecting a good story from it, I received something better, a great story told by Yuu Watase once again!
Riiko starts the story in an entertaining way, by measuring herself! Unsatisfied by the results of TV products, Riiko ends up running around in a panic, trying to gather things up for school. In the panic, she ends up accidentally throwing an undergarment into her next door neighbors balcony. She dubs him as a pervert when he tries to be polite in giving it back to him, and rushes out.
During the day, she meets a character named Gaku from the company Kronos. He gives her a card to a website that has the solution to all her answers, and when she goes, she finds a Nightly Lover. Being bored, she clicks off what she likes and thinks nothing of it. Unfortunately for her, she receives a big box the next day. When she opens it, a man falls out who ends up becoming her new boyfriend!
Any shojo fan will instantly fall in love with this manga. Not only does it include the perfect (naive) boyfriend, but it is full of humorous scenes. Some which include Night almost opening the door naked, a mother thinking Night is an action hero (like the Power Rangers), cracks about Gaku cosplaying and the situations that Riiko has to endure just to keep Night. Even throughout all this, Night proves to Riiko that he will protect her and he will be the perfect boyfriend to her no matter what.
This is defiantly a manga to add to your library.

I like this story, my only reason for reading it would be my love for Alice 19th. I wasn't too thrilled with Night's name. I undertood the spurr of the moment name, but I found it annoying. There were a few twists that were interesting, but nothing that was unpredictable or amazing. I liked it, but if I hadn't read it...no skin of my bones.
